Creatures 2 - Windows 10 Lag Fix

I recently posted a topic on Creatures Caves about this fix, so thought I'd share it on here too!

As everyone knows, Creatures 2 is incredibly picky out what system it runs on; up until the GOG.com releases, we had to rely on hex editing in order to run it on Windows 7. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Windows 10, and the game suffers from numerous issues. The first is the Black Box of Doom, but thanks to Issy, a solution for fixing it has been found.

But what about those who experience serious lag when running the game? Well, this problem arises from the way Windows 10 emulates DirectDraw. I'm no expert, but it is apparently very poorly coded and so cannot handle high resolutions very well at all, leading to severe lag. So how can we fix it?

Well, to get rid of the lag, simply change your screen resolution to 1280x720, relaunch Creatures 2, and the game should run much smoother. It will obviously look a lot lower res now, but it's really not much of a bother, especially as most people first played the game on those horrible CRT monitors at horrendously low resolutions anyway. Besides, your creatures will be bigger on-screen!

Now, there are several issues with the game that are not related to the lag. Firstly, certain parts of the game such as the Status Bar and tool-tips will be very buggy, or just won't appear at all. I don't know why this occurs, I'm afraid, but the game is still perfectly playable.

I should also mention I have emailed GOG.com about these issues, and I'm currently awaiting a response. I'd recommend everybody else does the same. It might not receive a response, but at least we'll have tried!

I hope this guide has helped people. If anyone has any questions or additional problems, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Edit: It seems the highest resolution the game is willing to run at without suffering from lag is 1366 x 768. I have no idea why running the game at 1080p in Windows 10 causes lag whereas it runs perfectly fine on Windows 7, but I think the issue might be DirectDraw related.

Creatures Series Intro Compilation (1996 - 2000)

Last week I posted a video compilation of the introductory sequences from each of the creatures games: Creatures 1, Creatures 2, Creatures Adventures, Creatures 3 and Creatures Playground, to The Norn Nebula's YouTube channel. I would have posted about this sooner, but encountered some heartbreaking news last Tuesday - one of my real-life friends had sadly taken his own life after apparently being missing since Sunday. I know it is a sensitive subject to talk about and may upset some people, but if you are feeling down or depressed, please speak to a professional, or someone close to you, such as a friend or relative. Nobody should have to face this alone.

In regards to the Norn Nebula, I'm planning on adding some more stuff to the new YouTube channel, and may even record some new gameplay videos similar to Jessica's of Discover Albia. I've been busy a lot grieving recently and I've been working on uni work so I've not had much time, unfortunately. I'll try and get stuff done as soon as I'm available, however.

Also, today marks the second day of the CCSF 2016. You can find out more on the CCSF 2016 website here.

Back to Albia - Entry 2 - Baby Boom

As soon as I opened up the world this morning I immediately saw Barbas, Delphine and Aela huddled in the corner. Barbas had finally reached adolescence, but unfortunately neither Delphine or Aela were yet pregnant. I did noticed Delphine shivering quite a lot, which made no sense as the incubator room was fairly warm, and it was summer! I've figured that it is most likely genetic, just like her lack of tail and yellowish tint.

After a short while I heard a kisspop, signalling that someone had mated successfully. Yep, Delphin was finally pregnant! Unfortunately the only downside is that she and Barbas may not be genetically compatible, which could result in a few stillborn babies. If they do survive, however, hopefully they'll inherit some of the pair's more interesting traits, such as Barbas' adventurousness and Delphine's lack of a tail.

A while later Delphine laid two eggs. In case anyone is wondering, I downloaded Mike L Anderson's Reproduction COB Pack to allow multiple births depending on what condition the female Norn is in - essentially, the better she is feeling, the larger her clutch of eggs will be. The COB also has several other optional features, including livebearing and the ability for Norns to lay identical twins. I highly recommend it for wolfling runs and/or realism!

A while later both of the eggs hatched. Sadly, both babies collapsed unconscious within seconds of their births. At this rate I might have to consider removing Delphine from the world, as her genes clearly aren't compatible with Barbas'. I decided to call the two stillborn norns Brittany and Alf, and watched them float away towards the sky. I'm hoping that if Delphine and Barbas do have another clutch of eggs at least one of them will survive. Remember, breeding Canny Norns with Nova Subeterra or regular hatchery norns is NOT recommended.

After a short while, Delphine became pregnant again, this time laying only one egg. Thankfully, the baby wasn't stillborn this time. Named Louie, he was quite adventurous and loved playing with the toy dog and the slinky. He appears to get frightened and lonely sometimes, however, most likely due to genetics. Still, I think he makes an excellent addition to Albia!

A while later Delphine and Barbas had yet another child, this time a little girl whom I named Jade due to her striking colour. Like Louie, she also shares her parents' intelligence, and I'm now quite surprised I've had two more babies that haven't been stillborn.

Imagine my surprise, however, when I found that Aela had laid not two, but six eggs! Hopefully this will make up for the fact she isn't a very good breeder and only seemed interested in Barbas once Delphine had left for the desert. Once all of the babies were hatched, I named the females Leisha, Keish, Meesha and Nisha, and the males Simon and Garfunkel. Unfortunately this means the incubator cavern is getting rather crowded, but hopefully the norns will leave to look for other areas to live in as they grow older.

No sooner had I hatched all of the Norns, Aela decided to lay another five! This time however I decided to keep the eggs unhatched in case of an emergency, and also because I am finding it quite difficult to keep track of so many births at once. I do wonder where Aela gets her strength though!

I hope everyone has enjoyed reading today's entry of Back to Albia. Stay tuned for the next update soon!

Back to Albia - Entry 1 - A New Beginning

I admit that Docking Station Galaxy has been rather stagnant most of this year. A contributing factor to this is the fact I've had very little motivation to actually do anything. However, I'm hoping to share a few upcoming blog posts about my current group of norns in Creatures 2. Creatures 2 was my first creatures game, and is also probably my favourite, so it only seems right that I do a series of blog entries about it.

Rather than keep all of the Norns together, I have decided to import/hatch them, and then export to my harddrive once they're reached around the middle of childhood. I feel this will give them plenty of time to explore their surroundings and learn their vocabulary. Let's meet the Norns!

The most recent norn is Delphine, a Canny Norn I adopted from the Creatures repository. She seems fairly intelligent, and has quite a unique appearance with her Ron Norn arms and lack of a tail. She almost looks like a Gorilla! Another thing I noticed is that she ages slightly faster than regular norns do, so hopefully she'll be ready to breed soon!

Unfortunately shortly after Delphine arrived in the world she contracted a fever, but soon managed to get over it. I managed to snap up a picture of her shortly after drinking from the water fountain. At least I know she can take care of herself!

The second norn I'm going to introduce is Barbas. I can't remember exactly where I got him from, but he's fairly intelligent, and has an interesting green tint to his fur. He also spoke German when I first imported him, so I had to re-teach him all of his vocabulary. I also believe he is a Nova Subterra Norn, which may lead to a higher risk of stillborn babies if he breeds with Delphine, as she is a Canny Norn, but hopefully most of his children will turn out fine.

The final norn is Aela. The oldest Norn out of the three, she is a beautiful Emerald Norn, and is also the only norn that is native the world. She seems fairly intelligent, and has already met Barbas, whom she seems to get along with fairly well. Hopefully she will also act friendly towards Delphine and there won't be a huge slap-fest among them both!

Eventually the time came for me to introduce the three Norns to each other. Delphine didn't really pay any attention to anyone. However, Barbas seemed to enjoy kissing Aela quite a lot! After Aela walked away though he moved his attention towards Delphine. To be honest, the norns seem to care more about eating than each other. Hopefully this will improve once they reach adolescence!

A while later I caught up with Barbas standing all by himself on the bridge, probably getting some peace from the two girls pestering him all the time! Unfortunately, he later took a dive into the eastern ocean and I had to fish him out and place him back in the safety of the incubator cavern. Maybe another day, eh Barbas?

Upon placing Barbas back in the cavern I was startled to see Delphine was already in her youth stage, which is ironic given she is the youngest of the trio! Hopefully these genes will pass onto her offspring, allowing them to be able to breed much sooner, although I do hope it doesn't get out of hand.

No sooner had I placed Barbas back in the incubator room I found he had crept away to the Island of Love! How on Albia did he do it? Fearing he'd go swimming again, I took him back home and button disrupter on the lift call button. I wonder if his offspring will inherit his adventurous personality?

And so that brings us to a close for today's entry. Will we see a few eggs and the pitter-patter of tiny paws soon? Will Barbas go off on any exciting adventures? Find out in the next entry of Back to Albia!

Breed Review - Albian Bat Norns (C2)

Norngirl, creator of some of Creatures 2's best Norn breeds, originally released the Albian Bat Norns for Halloween in 2009. Are they any good? Read on to find out!

Sprites - 10/10

Like all of Norngirl's breeds, the Bat Norn's sprites have been beautifully drawn, and I quite like their adorable little canine teeth.  Bat Norns also differ between genders, with the males having longer snouts and brown fur whereas the females have shorter snouts, fluffy brown heads and white fur.

The Albian Bat Norns animate well, although once they reach childhood they bounce slightly whenever they walk. However, this isn't really a big problem, and it actually suits them quite well.

Genome - 9/10

Albian Bat Norns have different diets depending on their gender: males eat fruit only whereas females prey on creatures by hitting and pushing them. Whenever Bat Norns feel cold, they go to sleep, and they enjoy dark places, such as the incubator and the swamp.

The Albian Bat Norn genome was created by Razgriz, who did a pretty good job with it. The only thing I don't like is that they never go to sleep if they're in a dark area, which is pretty unrealistic, although it makes them much easier to care for than regular Norns.

Difficulty - Very Easy

I found Albian Bat Norns very easier to look after, and the fact that they don't have to sleep gives you more time to play with them and explore Albia. Their dietary requirements are also relatively easy to fulfill.

Overall rating - 10/10

Like all of Norngirl's breeds, the Albian Bat Norns are an excellent addition to any Creatures 2 game, rarely suffer from OHSS, and are just too cute!

New Genetic Breed - Hip-Hop Grendels!

I've been very busy this week, and have released my first genetic Grendel breed. Known as the Hip-Hop Grendels, these colourful characters are much more social than your run-of-the-mill Grendel, and will even dance when in the company of each other!

The Hip-Hop Grendels use a modified version of Lis Morris' Boney Grendel genome, along with several addition features as stated above. They can be downloaded from here.

Last Release of 2012 - S&M Norns

As many of you may know, my last ever genetic breed release was way back in November 2011 last year! Fortunately, I have decided to release a new one just in time for the new year. I present to you, the S&M Norns, for Creatures 2!

Don't let those innocent blue eyes fool you, S&M (Sadomasochistic) Norns are not your average genetic breed; whenever they are slapped, fall or even wall-bonk, they'll receive a healthy dose of Sex Drive in addition to a substantial amount of pain! But that isn't all. In addition to becoming aroused by pain, S&M Norns also take great pleasure in slapping each other. Whenever they become aroused, they'll become enraged, and may spank each other around for a great deal of time, becoming extremely (and somewhat disturbingly) aroused in the process: imagine Essex Norns with whips!

Also included in the RAR file are two adult, pre-trained S&M Norns aptly named Pain and Agony. Enjoy, and happy new year!

Creatures 2 - A Rant

Hello everybody, I'm very sorry for my absence from the Creatures Community, but I essentially lost interest in the series. Yesterday, however, I decided to play Creatures 2 again. Creatures 2 is probably my favourite game in the series, it has much more depth than Creatures 1 and you are much more involved with your Norns than in the later games. There is one compartment, though, where Creatures 2 fails.

When Creatures 2 originally came out, it had many flaws, mainly the Norn genome, which was to put it simply, awful. Norns suffered from OHSS (One Hour Stupidity Syndrome), which made them forget everything they had learned and essentially made their brains to to mush. Norns also had sleeping and eating problems which lead to premature deaths. The game was also quite unstable and often crashed (this has only ever happened to me on Windows XP or Windows Millenium Edition).

Many users have released updates and stuff to help relieve these problems, such as the Canny and Nova Subterra Norns. Creatures Labs even released a genome upgrade to help combat OHSS. Unfortunately however, I believe that the game itself as a whole is flawed in many ways, even with these updates

Firstly, I have never managed to get a Norn to sleep without telling it to "rest" and slapping it several times. When the Norns do sleep, it is often only briefly, and not enough the relief the ridiculous amount of sleepiness and tiredness that has built up in their systems. I think it would have been better if the game had been programmed to "lock" Norns into sleep, so they could only awake when their sleepiness/tiredness have reached a certain levels.

Another problem I have with Creatures 2 is eating; you can literally surround most Norns with food and they will still starve. I try telling my Norns to eat, but they usually never actually "eat" the food, they often only look at it. What is the point of verbs when Norns rarely even understand their meaning? (Probably linked to the sleeping problem).

I have also found pregnancy and mating difficult for Norns in C2. Whenever Norns mate, their strength rapidly depletes, and they often end up so tired that whenever they go to sleep later their sleepiness/tiredness levels get stuck and won't deplete. Pregnancy is also difficult, as female Norns giving birth regularly get distracted and don't lay their eggs, which is extremely annoying in wolfling runs. Pregnancy is also tiring, and combined with all of those other factors, it seems as though premature death is pretty inevitable for Norns.

Well, rant over for now. I'm aware that these problems have mostly been solved in the  Canny or Nova Subterra Norns, but for some reason they still seem to suffer from problems in my worlds. Do I need to update Creatures 2 or something? If you have anything to say please leave it in the comments section.

A Few Releases

Here are several Creatures projects that I have previously worked on or never released:

The RGB Norns were a variety of red, green and blue Chichi Norns that I was going to release for the CCSF 2011. Unfortunately I lost interest in them, but here they are for your enjoyment! I may make an egg agent later if people want me to. Download the RGB Norns here!

The Tutti-Frutti Norns were originally created by me in 2007 under the name of "Bonsai Norns". They are C2 only and were created after splicing generations of Creatures. Please analyse their genome as much as possible! Download the Tutti-Frutti Norns here!

Regarding my future projects, I have recently considered creating a new Ettin genetic breed, named the Jewel Ettins in regards to the fact that they come in three varieties: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. They are also a homage to the late Creatures Community member, Jewels, who passed away in 2001 after suffering a stroke.

Download the Creatures 2 Soundtrack

If you like Creatures Docking Station's music, then you'll probably enjoy listening to the Creatures 2 Soundtrack. Composed by Peter Chilvers, the C2 soundtrack is composed of beautiful, ambient music and I highly recommend that you check it out.

Download the Creatures 2 Soundtrack here.

I spent nearly five hours recording, editing and compiling the soundtrack together, so please tell me what you think!
